Since the Simplon pass receives lots of snow also early in the season it is a great spot for first ski touring experiences. On this trip, we took one weekend as an initiation to ski touring, or in this case rather snowboard touring. On the first day, we climbed and skied a nice slope just above Niederalp. This gave us the opportunity to experience all sorts of snow conditions, from wet to powdery, due to the difficult weather. The second day we climbed to within the vicinity of Mäderhorn and on the upper slopes detoured towards P. 2946. This gave us a good opportunity to dig a snow profile and make some snow stability tests. The pictures tell the story of the way down: powder turns at its best.
